Sometimes it can seem like the harder you work and the closer you get to whatever it is that God has promised you, the further away the promise actually becomes. It drives you further and further until you feel like you have nothing left to give and the promise will never be reached.
This reminds me of a baseball game that I once attended. The closer it got to the ninth inning the more the anticipation grew. Everyone was rooting for the team that they wanted to win. All of the players were so committed to take home the victory regardless of what the score on the board read. I actually was exhausted just watching and by the time we reached the end of the ninth, the score was tied calling for an extra inning. I felt so bad for the players and wondered why the losing team just didn’t give up and get this game over with? It was late and I was tired so I knew that they had to be. As my empathy grew I was hit with a revelation. These men are made for this! They train day in and day out so that they will have the stamina, drive, and will to go the distance! They are mentally prepared to fight to the finish and it ain’t over until it’s over.
The way those baseball players are trained and prepared to go the distance is the same way that God trains and prepares us to reach our victory. But instead of a state of the art training camp that we can schedule every year, we are prepared through fire. We are prepared through trials and tribulations that make us stronger at every break. It is when we are at our weakest point and want to give up that God’s strength kicks in for the extra inning! It is when the enemy shows us all of the reasons that we should quit that God shows how he made us to go on! So today my hope for you is that you will continue to go on. Whether you are a baseball fan or not, I pray that you find the strength of God to win this battle in your extra innings regardless of how long it takes!
