Have you ever received a glimpse of God’s promise to you? It was something so wonderful and it had your name on it. It was something that you may of been praying for, hoping for, or working towards to no avail. Then God stepped in and in the blink of an eye you got your hands on it at last. This is something that you have wanted so bad that it scares you to think this is really it! You wonder if you are indeed ready for it like you thought and you are so afraid of losing it you become obsessed with holding on to it. Insecurity sets in because although this is something you have wanted for a long time, you are not sure you deserve it or are good enough to poses it after the fact but you try your best anyway. This is a blessing from God! Finally my time has come. You try your best to present the person that you think people expect you to be in your new element, even if you don’t feel that way on the inside. Your education, experience, family background, income, etc has not prepared you for what you are now apart of so you try to fit in as best as you can, but you lose it anyway. God allows it to just slip away. You are more than devastated, when this happens. How can God do this to me? Anger and disappointment over takes you. There is nothing left inside of you. You feel embarrassed and humiliated because in your soul you knew this was it for you. How could you have been so wrong? How could you have misread that harmonious feeling in your spirit that told you without a doubt this is it, this is home? You feel as if there is nowhere else to go from this point. The disappointment turns to emptiness and you look to God for answers. Answers to why he would allow you to be so mislead when you carefully looked to him for direction. Why would he allow you to grab ahold so firmly to something that was not yours in the first place?
What you think is the end, may just be the beginning.
When God begins the process of positioning us at a higher level, it can be a challenging and confusing time in our lives. When what we see does not match what he tells us, we don’t understand that there is a stretching process where God will present us with a clear vision and sometimes even give us a taste of it only to take it away in order to motivate us and begin our process. In order to teach us total dependence on him he has to get us to a place where we can not rely on any of our own resources or abilities. He has to teach us to be obedient and to trust him in any circumstance.
“Therefore, say to the people of Israel: ‘I am the Lord. I will free you from your oppression and will rescue you from your slavery in Egypt. I will redeem you with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment. I will claim you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God who has freed you from your oppression in Egypt. I will bring you into the land I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will give it to you as your very own possession. I am the Lord!’” Exodus 6:6-8 (NLT)
When God promised to deliver the Israelites from Egypt, they were not aware of how long it would take them to crossover to the promised land. God’s perfect plan for us is always music to our ears! The disappointment comes when God tells us it is ours and we put our own expected time frame on to his promise. God’s timing is perfect as hard as that may be to accept in times of disappointment. Sometimes a clear message from God is followed by a period in the wilderness. It is in this time that we need that glimpse into our future to become the driving force that will push us to the other side of our journey. God has to give us something to hold on to as he stretches and molds us into the person that he is calling us to be. It is a painful process and it can be the most challenging thing we will ever have to face but God promises us it will be worth it and we should count it all as joy! It is in our setbacks that we learn how overcome adversity. It is in our trials that we learn to praise God with nothing. As he heals our heart from all of the wounds that life has inflicted, we are being refined in this time. In this time we become the person that does not have to obsess with holding on to anything that comes from God. We become secure with who he made us to be and what our purpose in life is. We become assured that there is no other person fit for the job. We become a person that no longer has to try our best to present a persona that we think people expect us to be in our new element because we are that person and we know the expectations of God. If we can only survive the wilderness, in God’s appointed time we will exit prepared and ready for our promised land!
